STEP 8 – MAKE IT PERSONAL
“It’s only business… nothing personal.”
This has to be the most overused and blatantly untrue statement ever to arise in the business world.
OF COURSE it’s personal!
For your client it is going to be one of the most personal things in their life!
They have invested their time and passion into this venture, grown it from an infant to what it currently is and poured endless hours and heartbreak into creating something from little more than an idea.
How can you think it is not personal?
So if you, as a consultant, are not personally invested in helping my business move forward and succeed, how can I trust you?
Stop treating your engagements as just another payday and start becoming emotionally invested in your client’s success and your contribution to getting them there.
Share their failures and disappointments and rejoice in their wins as much as your client does.
Step forward into the business and show you care about more than whether or not the client makes regular consulting payments.
It’s about more than money to your client so it should be the same for you.
I still follow some of my earlier client’s success and how their businesses is moving forward several years after the end of my engagement and feel a bit of pride that it was my advice and work that helped them overcome their barriers and get to where they are today.
If you don’t care and want to remain isolated and separate from your client, you will never share in the pride that your client feels in their business and the consulting world will be a hollow existence focussing only on money.
I don’t know about you but I need something more than $$ to keep me enthused and motivated.
